It is that time of year again. Summer along the Grand Strand brings warm weather and packed beaches, but it also signals the start of hurricane season in the Atlantic. Officially, hurricane season begins June 1st and ends November 30th. Ninety seven percent of all tropical systems are generated during this time period each year. The month most likely to produce a storm is September.
NOAA (National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration) has predicted a slightly less active season this year. It predicts three to six hurricanes with eight to thirteen named tropical storms. Even with predictions of less activity, it only takes one storm to cause catastrophic damage to home and business owners property. It is imperative that you take this time to carefully review your insurance policies with your insurance agent as well as make emergency plans in the event of a storm and/or evacuation.
One crucial piece of insurance during hurricane season is Flood Insurance. Most property insurance policies include wind damage from hurricanes and other storms, but specifically exclude flood damage. Even if you live in an area that recommends or requires you have flood insurance, chances are you may not have the coverage you need. Some estimates suggest that just 10-40% of homeowners in flood zones actually have coverage. As flood zones shift, some homeowners may not know that they are considered at a higher risk then previous years. You can check the current flood zone maps by visiting FEMA's website. With a 30 day waiting period for new flood insurance policies to take effect, it is best to address your insurance needs early on in the season. If you already have a flood insurance policy there still may be some exclusions and limitations that can leave you without adequate coverage. Review your policy with your agent to avoid being caught by surprise in the event of a loss.
